Sterling silver is meant to distinguish between items that are mostly silver and those items that are 'silver plated'. Like gold, sterling silver is hallmarked but silver plate is not and this can lead to some confusion. This is because many makers stamp their own logo on the items produced and often include the initials of the type of plating used i.e. EPS or EPNS. The combination of logo and initials can look like a hallmark, often on purpose.
